 Waste Auditing Projects

 Suffolk Coastal District Council
The brief was to enable an increase in kerbside recycling rates from 24% to 36% over 2 years. A two part project monitored the introduction of separate kerbside green waste collection into trial areas, with a view to extension of the trial throughout the district. A parallel trial on the differing effect of the use of bins and bags for green waste collection was coupled with the effects of the use of degradable polymer bags on resulting compost quality. Subsequent data analysis provided seasonality predictions enabling expansion throughout the district with known predicted volumes by type of property and local area. Full Report.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council & Forest Heath District Council
An investigation into the most suitable method of collecting segregated waste from the kerbside was devised. Comparative trials of the use of bind vs bags, and weekly vs fortnightly collections were monitored for dry recyclables, green waste and residual waste. Recommendations were made regarding frequency and method of collection, householder participation rates and expected recycling rates.

 Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council
A series of audits monitoring the introduction of segregated green kitchen and garden waste kerbside collections into a trial area, noting the effects on recycling rates and overall volumes collected before and after the change. Continuing with a third audit to monitor four new areas prior to expansion of the green waste collection routines. The merits of weekly as opposed to fortnightly collections and the effects on volumes and recycling rates were also examined. Full Report ;Summary Report.

 Hereford & Worcester County Council
By auditing the quantity of clearly defined materials that were received at a Civic Amenity site over a period of one week it was possible determine the diversion rate of recyclable materials away from landfill and the energy values of the associated residual waste sent to landfill. A similar audit gave comparable results for material originating from a materials recycling facility.
