Integrated solutions to optimise performance
ORA and her partners have extensive experience both in the UK and Europe in designing and implementing integrated waste collection schemes which meet the specific requirements of our clients. These generally demand one or more of the following:

Minimisation of waste
ORA believe that integrated waste collection systems are a crucial component of a sustainable waste management strategy and a key means of achieving the progressively stringent statutory targets faced by local authority clients. To date ORA have been involved in the evaluation and implementation of a wide range of schemes in metropolitan, urban and rural areas across the UK

Clean recyclable systems
Minimisation
of waste
Indiscriminate introduction of a separate green waste collection
service can substantially increase the total amounts of waste
arising per household. Understanding the effects of home composting
and seasonality can contribute towards minimising the costs
of green waste collection.
Minimisation
of recyclable materials remaining in the residual waste stream
Public awareness of local objectives is an important factor if
co-operation in the source separation of materials is to be achieved.
An accurate knowledge, obtained from waste audits, of the residual
waste content is an essential precursor to the improvement of
segregation.
Maximisation
of efficient separation into “clean” recyclable
streams
Contamination of the segregated recyclable streams can be just
as unmanageable as a reluctance to attempt segregation. Properly
targeted waste auditing can identify this problem so it can be
tackled through ongoing education and awareness raising techniques.
Minimising
the cost of change
Segregation by the householder is free; segregation by the local
authority comes at a cost. The efficient collection of kerbside
segregated materials into appropriately sized bins, bags or
boxes can be encouraged by adjusting the frequency of collection.
Early decisions on such issues will enable collection vehicle
design to be optimised.
Achievement
of BVPI targets
ORA can provide assistance in progressive improvement in recycling
performance to meet BVPI targets. Improving BVPI performance
is only possible if diversion of recyclables out of the residual
waste stream is maximised, and collection systems can be tailored
to the wastes arising.
Achievement
of LATS targets
Diversion of biodegradable material from landfill is obligatory
under the LATS legislation. The ultimate solution to achieving
adequate diversion will depend on the amounts arising now and
in future projections. ORA can assist in establishing minimisation
and segregation routines, in forecasting possible change, and
ultimately in the selection of technology for a long term solution.
Communications
strategy and raising public awareness
Ensuring the co-operation of the public is a vital element in
achieving improving waste segregation performance. ORA can
assist with the preparation of publicity material, can advise
on the most appropriate means of communication or distribution,
and can formulate questionnaires that will provide reliable
information on public attitudes, whether before, during or
after the change is implemented.
Resourcing,
implementing and monitoring the scheme
The implementation of change can drain existing local resources.
ORA is able to provide the means to overcome these temporary
work overloads. Data collection, data processing, doorstep
canvassing, waste monitoring, comparative surveys, publicity
are all areas
in which ORA can provide experience, expertise and advice.
